| Pear farmers battle magpies |
|
Pear farmers in Jimo of Shandong Province are fighting a greedy enemy, Bandao Metropolis News reports.
Every day hundreds of magpies descend on local orchards to peck at the ripe fruit. The loss for farmers is estimated to run to several thousands of yuan.
Jin, a local farmer who rents a 40-mu (2.6 hectares) orchard, said most of the pears have already been ruined by the ravenous birds and fallen to the ground.
He tried hiring three men to pick the rotten fruit off the ground and drive the birds away with firecrackers, but it didn`t work well.
As the birds are protected by law, Jin is searching for an effective but harmless method to drive them away.(SD News)
