Education is developing fast. By the end of 2005, students at different schools reach 1.2928 million, an increase of 0.8% compared with 2004. There are 59 schools of higher education with 172,400 students, an increase of 7.5%; 487,100 students at school, an increase of 10.5%; 98,800 students at secondary vocational schools, an increase of 8.6%; 378,800 pupils at primary schools, an increase of 8.8%. All the school age children enter school. 99.7% of the pupils who graduate from primary schools enter a higher school. 1872 students are at special education schools.
Scientific research and technological development have made new progress. 48 million yuan is disbursed for practical technological research and development and 264 new scientific research plans are proposed. 174 hi-tech enterprises are ratified, totaling 625; there are 6504 patent applications, an increase of 58.8%; 2130 applications are approved, an increase of 24.3%.
Hi-tech development zones are developing fast. In 2005, the total income from technology, industry and trade amounts to 66.3 billion yuan, total industrial increase value 16.2 billion yuan, profits tax 5.6 billion yuan and exports 320 million US dollars, an increase of 33.7%, 34.6%, 48.7% and 30.9% respectively. Large-scale enterprises have a sales income of 19.53 billion yuan, an increase of 20.2%; industrial increase value is 7.17 billion yuan, an increase of 20.1%; profits tax 1.91 billion yuan, an increase of 37.4%; exports 105 million US dollars, an increase of 39.1%; there are 817 newly-introduced projects with a total investment of 14.62 billion yuan, an increase of 27.1%; the practically used foreign investment is 81.2 million US dollars, an increase of 503.3%; the investment in fixed assets is 3.2 billion yuan, an increase of 78%; there are 70 new projects with a total area of 1.21 million square meters which begin to be constructed and the newly-completed area is 1.01 million square meters.
